Situated on the northeast coast of the island of Malta, Valletta has preserved its centuries-old character of fortified city.
A World Heritage Site, it has recently been the object of a complex redevelopment project, with the construction of the new Parliament building, the restoration from ruins of the adjacent Opera House, now transformed into an open-air theater, and the reconstruction of the city gate, which has been reinterpreted as a breach in the original city walls. The new Parliament House takes the form of two compact blocks on pilotis and makes elegant use of local stone for both the exterior cladding and interior surfaces. Original stone brises-soleil modules are carefully integrated into the fabric of the façades. They were designed taking into account the inclination of the sun’s rays and carry out an important role in controlling heat and light penetration, thereby significantly contributing to the climate control of the building. The project for the interiors, oriented in the direction of lightness of form and simplification, defines an exclusive, functional and welcoming environment.
